Life 2

So how we found out she has all of this was her pediatrician was concerned about her head size, so she wanted to order some labs, they took her blood and had to do a catheter. It is so sad watching your baby looking at you crying from not knowing whats going on and being uncomfortable and not being able to help her.
Once the results came back it said she had a bad UTI so they ordered a ultrasound (we went in on 3-5-10) on her kidneys to see how bad the infection was and if it has caused any damage, well once we got those images done you could see the cysts on her kidneys. She did so well when they did her ultrasound I was able to lay her down on me while they scanned her. She just watch the TV which had elmo on and the screen with her kidneys on them.
On the same day she also had to have another test called a voiding cystourethrogram a VCUG is a specific x-ray that examines the urinary tract. A catheter is placed in the urethra (tube that drains urine from the bladder to the outside of the body) and the bladder is filled with a liquid dye. X-ray images will be taken as the bladder fills and empties. The images will show if there is any reverse flow of urine into the ureters and kidneys,' which can indicate that your child has vesicoureteral reflux. Abby has what they call stage 4 reflux, that is why she has had an urinary tract infection. The bacteria that normally goes one way and out can reflux a little back and forth between the ureters and the bladder which causes an UTI.Which Abby has, that is why she has all the infections.
It was so cute to have her wearing a "mini" scrub top as a gown, I had brought her comfort items, which is her dolly and a Binky, she did so well, laying there on the table while all these weird things were above and around her. Once the test was done I got her redressed and she fell asleep in the car, she is such a trooper!
From my understanding she will have both these test on a regular basis which is every 6 months or every year depending on how the kidneys and reflux look form each test.
